A sealed early-print Famicom Zelda sold for $32,500 at Heritage. The yellow text on the box is the premium.
Heritage Auctions sold a sealed copy of Zelda no Densetsu: The Hyrule Fantasy, the 1986 Famicom Disk System original, graded CGC 9.2 with an A+ seal, for $32,500, ComicBook.com reported on October 12. The listing's distinction is the color of two words on the box. On this copy the "Disk System" text is yellow, which marks an early production run; Nintendo later switched that text to white, per ComicBook.com.
Heritage's lot photo, as reproduced by ComicBook.com, shows the CGC label in full: 9.2, Sealed, seal grade A+, with the notes "Sticker Seal, Yellow Disk System, FMC-ZEL, JAN Sticker." The article gives no sale date or auction name and does not say whether the price includes a premium. Heritage's own pages are off limits to our tools, so the lot link in the sources is unread.
The comp: $12,000 for a 9.0
The closest comp in our ledger is from The Graded Games Report's week of September 15–22, which lists a CGC 9.0 A+ sealed copy titled "First Print #2" at $12,000 on eBay. Both copies are sold as early prints, so the gap between $12,000 and $32,500 is two grade steps, a Heritage catalogue against an eBay listing, and a CGC label that spells the variant out. The price is 2.7 times the comp.
That gap is the early-print premium at a small scale. The Famicom Disk System market is a fraction of the NES market in dollars, so the signal that moves six figures on an American box moves five figures on a Japanese one.
What the NES ladder says about early prints
The Legend of Zelda on NES is the clearest case in graded games of the print run carrying the price. The results, from the sources below:
| Copy | Grade | Price | Sale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early production (No Rev-A, round SOQ) | Wata 9.0 A | $870,000 | Heritage, July 9, 2021 |
| First production (NES TM, No Rev-A) | WATA 8.0 A | $705,000 | Heritage, Oct 29–31, 2021 |
| First production | CGC 9.2 A | $375,000, incl. premium | Heritage, ended Aug 24, 2024 |
| First production | CGC 9.4 A+ | $300,000, incl. premium | Heritage, ended May 24, 2025 |
| Later print, oval seal | VGA 85 | $12,544 | eBay, week of July 14–21, 2026 |
In the October 2021 Heritage sale, a later-production copy graded 9.6 A+ made $156,000 while the first-production 8.0 made $705,000, per Overstreet Access. The grade was higher and the price was less than a quarter. On an NES Zelda box, the print run outranks the grade.
The Famicom sale is the same ordering, one market over and two orders of magnitude down. The yellow-text copy is not the best-graded sealed Famicom Zelda that could exist; it is the earliest-print one that reached a catalogue, and the catalogue priced the print.
What to watch
- The next yellow-text copy at any grade, and whether Heritage's catalogue note travels into eBay listing titles.
- Heritage's autumn video game sales, where first-production NES Zelda copies set the ladder above and where the next early-print Famicom lot would surface.
- The Graded Games Report's weekly top sales, for Famicom Disk System titles cracking a list that Pokémon games have led most weeks since late August, per the report.
Figures are as reported by the sources below on the dates shown. ComicBook.com does not state whether the $32,500 includes a buyer's premium. This is market data and commentary, not investment advice.
