A Zorua promo drawn by a six-year-old sold for $156,000. Its last reported PSA 10 sale was $8,700.
The 2010 Pokémon Illusion's Zorua Design Contest promo, Kindergarten Winner variant, sold for $156,000 in a Fanatics Collect auction that closed September 27, ComicBook.com reported on October 9 and Dexerto on October 10. The card shows Zorua and Pikachu riding a bus. Megu Taniguchi drew it at six, when she won the kindergarten category of the contest run for the film Zoroark: Master of Illusions, and her prize included a small print run of her own design.
A print run near 100
ComicBook.com puts the run at approximately 100 copies and notes unverified rumors of a smaller, privately printed batch; it says it is unclear which batch this copy came from. Dexerto, citing ComicBook.com, uses the same figure. Neither source gives a population count at any grade.
On the grade, the sources differ. Dexerto calls the card a PSA 10 Gem Mint. ComicBook.com states no grade, and the Fanatics Collect lot photo it runs shows a BGS 10 Pristine label on the slab, by our reading of the image. Either way it is a top-grade copy, and the question of which company graded it stays open until a census entry turns up.
The comp ladder
Dexerto reports that a PSA 10 copy sold for $8,700 in 2023. At $156,000, this sale is about 18 times that figure. One sale at $8,700 and one at $156,000, three years apart, is a thin ladder, and it says the card had no active market at six figures before this auction. The next copy to surface, in any grade, will show which of those two prices the market believes.
Where it sits in this issue's prices
For scale: in the same stretch of October, a CGC 9 2014 World Championships No. 1 Trainer Pikachu, a card awarded only to tournament winners, made $292,800 at Goldin, and the four e-Reader holos in this issue's Lead sold for $180,000 to $216,000 each on populations of 13 to 129. At $156,000 the Zorua trades in the tier of trophy cards and thin-census gems, on a run of about 100 and no public census at all.
The same week as the $8.4 million Pikachu
The Zorua closed in the same Fanatics weekly cycle as the 2015 Art Academy "Raincoat" Pikachu, which sold for $8.4 million on September 27 and led our Newsletter No. 002. Chase Society's October 9 check of Fanatics' lots above $500,000 found that Pikachu and three others still flagged unpaid; the Zorua, at $156,000, falls below that line, so its payment status is unreported.
The two cards share a profile: a contest prize, a run of about 100 copies, and a story that travels outside the hobby. Dexerto and ComicBook.com both led with the six-year-old. That is the market read. The buyers at this level are paying for a provenance they can retell, on a supply small enough that one bidder's view sets the price, and a card with a story can jump from four figures to six without a ladder in between.
What this does to the next copy
With roughly 100 printed and no public census, every other owner now has one comp at $156,000 and one at $8,700. A copy listed at the new level that sits unsold would say as much as a second sale near it.
What to watch
- The next Zorua Design Contest winner card to sell, any grade, any category variant.
- Fanatics' September 27 payments. Chase Society's unpaid flags on the larger lots from the same close.
- A grading-company census entry for the card, which would settle the PSA-versus-BGS question and give a population.
Figures are as reported by the sources below. We have not verified the grade beyond the published lot photo. This is market data and commentary, not investment advice.
