A PSA 10 "Raincoat" Pikachu sold for $8.4M. The last public high was $156,250.
On September 28, a PSA 10 2015 Pokémon Japanese XY Promo Art Academy Pikachu, the card collectors call "Raincoat Pikachu," sold for $8.4 million at Fanatics Collect after 64 bids, according to Dexerto. The price includes Fanatics' 20% buyer's premium. Dexerto ranks it as the second most expensive Pokémon card ever sold, behind the Pikachu Illustrator that sold for $16.4 million in February.
The card comes from a contest. Y. Fujishima won the Dress-Up Pikachu category of a worldwide art contest tied to the 3DS game Pokémon Art Academy, and his prize was 100 officially printed copies of his design. Dexerto reports the card was never sold in stores.
The sales before September 28
These are the earlier PSA 10 sales our sources report:
| When | Venue | Price, PSA 10 | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| July 2024 | Fanatics Collect | $12,600 | Dexerto |
| June 2025 | Fanatics Collect | $19,200 | Dexerto |
| 2025 | not stated | $16,100 and $26,100 | Kotaku, citing PriceCharting |
| June 2026 | Heritage | $156,250 | Kotaku |
| August 2026 | not stated | $79,999.99 | Kotaku |
| Sept 28, 2026 | Fanatics Collect | $8,400,000 with premium | Dexerto |
Kotaku calls the June Heritage sale the previous high. The September price is about 54 times that sale and about 440 times the June 2025 sale at Fanatics.
PriceCharting hasn't moved with it. As of October 9, its PSA 10 value for the card is $79,999.99, the same figure as every monthly point on its chart since January 2026 (PriceCharting). That's PriceCharting's estimate, not a sale, and it hasn't absorbed the $8.4 million result.
The other Art Academy card
Raincoat Pikachu wasn't the only card from the Art Academy promos to sell for seven figures at Fanatics in September. Sports Illustrated reports that a PSA 10 2015 Japanese XY Promo Art Academy Daisuke Ochiai Mudkip sold for $3,720,000 in Fanatics' September Premier Auction, in the week of September 20 to 26. SI says 100 of those Mudkips exist and three have graded Gem Mint.
That puts two Art Academy promos from the same house past $3.7 million inside about a week. The two cards share a source and a print run of 100, but their PSA 10 counts are far apart. Three PSA 10s, as SI reports for the Mudkip, is the kind of census that has carried prices at the top of the market this year: the PSA 8 Gold Trophy Pikachu in this issue's Lead is the only copy PSA has graded. Raincoat Pikachu has 57 copies in PSA 10, according to Kotaku, which cites PSA's figures via Polygon.
Why this price is hard to read
At 57 copies in the same grade, an $8.4 million sale is a claim about a card that other owners hold in identical condition. Kotaku's coverage calls the result "incredibly hard to explain." It notes a Reddit thread claiming the sale was legitimate and paid, and says it asked Fanatics for comment; the article reports no reply. We have no information either way on whether the sale closed as reported.
A single result this far above every earlier sale can be read two ways. If buyers now value the card near $8.4 million, the next PSA 10 sales would show it, landing far above the $156,250 Heritage price. If they land near June's level, the September sale stays a single data point, and the Heritage sale remains the more useful comp for anyone pricing a copy.
The Trophy Pikachu in this issue's Lead has no second copy to check its price against. Raincoat Pikachu has 56 others in the same grade, so its price can be tested every time one of them sells.
What to watch
- The next public PSA 10 sale, at any venue, against $156,250 (June) and $8.4 million (September).
- Any statement from Fanatics on the sale.
- PriceCharting's PSA 10 value, and whether it moves off $79,999.99.
- New PSA 10 listings: a jump in copies offered after September 28 would show how owners read the price.
Figures are as reported by the sources below on the dates shown. PriceCharting values are estimates, not sales. This is market data and commentary, not investment advice.
